I need advice on how to groom my Shih Tzu?

I brush him regularly, trim his toe nails and the hair around his eyes--his coat is beautiful and I'd like to keep it medium length (2-3) inches. All of the groomers around here shave Shih Tzus really short. Any tips on cutting his hair myself would be appreciated--please no disgusting comments.

As a former groomer, I know that the short "puppy clip" is really popular for Shih Tzus. If you like the longer look I recommend taking your dog to someone who specializes in that breed or has groomed for show (that would be the long flowing cut). If you are serious about learning to groom your own dog I recommend the following book: All (87) breed dog grooming for the beginner. This book is illustrated with great instructions and tells you all of the supplies you will need to get started. Good Luck and have fun!

I like it when the Shih Tzu's hair is really short. They look so cute that way. I wouldn't even attempt to cut his hair myself unless he got matted or had a knot.

If you want a full length coat, just don't trim him. Bathe him every week or 2 and use a doggie conditioner. Brush him every day. They even have spray-on detangler you can buy. A hair clip works well to keep the eyes clean. Remember to tweeze the hair from the inside of his ears every month or so.

As long as your dog is not matted, if you tell the groomer you want to keep the dog long, they should be able to do that.

Either tell them you want a bath/brush light scissor trim..which would be a scissor trim of the belly, back end, around the face, feet and maybe a little off the chest. Or if you want hair taken off the back of the dog as well, ask the groomer what is the longest comb attachment they have and ask them to show you how long the dogs coat will be left. I usually use the belly to show owners since it can be hidden.

Most of the times there is just a lack of communication between owner and groomer. Just try to keep your instructions as clear as possible. Sometimes what you say and what we hear or think you mean are 2 different things and vice versa.

I think full coated ShihTzus look really nice. Unfortunalty, most pet owner keep them short.
