Can I go blonde without bleach?

I recently cut my hair into a short bob in order to make it easier to dye my hair blonde. I currently have blonde highlights over my natural medium brown hair -- in other words, the only color in my hair is the blonde highlights everything else is still "virgin hair."

I've been wanting to go blonde for a long time... goldish blonde. I have light skin and light brown eyes, so I think it would look ok. I just don't want to use any more bleach than what's already on my higlights because my hair is thin.

A friend had mentioned that she used store bought hair dye without bleach to color her medium brown hair to blonde and she always had this nice healthy looking goldish blonde color, so I figure it is possible.

Others tell me to go to a professional but I think they'll want to use bleach, or it will cost too much.

What do you recommend? Any suggestions from anyone who's tried this?

I know you don't want to hear it...but go to a pro. Lightening can really damage your hair, and even though your friend did it...her hair is not the same as yours. Lightening is hard on your hair, and you could do more harm than good. Once the damage is done...it can't be so easily reversed. So a pro...it's worth saving your hair.

Why everyone looks great as a natural so should you. But if you do go through this go to a professional.

I would definitely go to a salon when going from med brown to blonde. They do not have to use bleach as long as you don't have any color on there already.....if your scared they'll want to use bleach, just make sure you tell them not to....a good hairdresser won't want to anyway with your thin hair that has been bleached already.

Go to a professional salon. But remember bleaching will sure damage your hair and you have to put extra care for your care after bleaching.

Well the at home kits have peroxide (a type of bleach) that's the only way to remove color, which is essentially what you are doing. If you want to try the at-home products to make that major of a change, be prepared to go to a salon to have it fixed. The problem with the at-home color and it says this on the box; it's meant to make a change within 2 - 3 shades, even if it shows dark brown/black to blond...which if memory serves they use a light brown as the darkest shade. Usually it will take 2 maybe more applications and it can turn brassy (reddish) if you have red in your hair, which most brunettes do. So, I'd say save your money and when you can afford it go to the salon, but then you have the upkeep every 4 - 6 weeks (max) and that will cost you, but not as much to do the roots. It's expensive to keep up blond hair, and potentially dangerous to try to do it from home. Maybe a cosmetology school, they are trained properly, and supervised. It would be a less expensive alternative, and practice for the graduating class.

Good luck.
